Featured Short Story: The Reverie

"Who are you?" I inquired. She kept mute as she swayed in the moonlight. Her naked form, glistened under the night glow. The ocean's moonlight reflections highlighted her bold features from a distance. She moved her hips with seductive precision. Her sweet scent, indistinctive and leaving almost as soon as it begins to waft into my senses.

"I must have you" I mutter to myself, bewitched by the seductress' charm

She stopped suddenly, dead in her tracks and locked her face onto me like she just realized I had been sitting there the entire time. Almost in a blink of a second she starts inching towards me with a new determination. Moving faster yet tastefully sultry and rhythmic. She approaches and pushes me backwards to lean against my arms for support. She slowly moves against me. I groan as my body comes alive. I try to will her to make a contact pushing my head forth and puckering my lips for a kiss. She ignores my  eager lips and leans closer to nibble my earlobes "I'm not real, you can't be here" she slowly whispers. Her voice soft like the breeze.

"What?" I giggle, ignoring the insanity of that insinuation.

"I'm not real, none of this is real. You have to wake up" she whispers again.

"What are you talking about?" I asked again.

In a flash, she arose from my body and starts walking towards the ocean. I couldn't believe my eyes, she still maintained her alluring rhythmic walk, so I bolted after her. I ran against the wind as it blew hard against my face. She seemed so near yet so far. A brief moment came as we neared the ocean shore, she came into view and I was convinced I could reach her, I stretched my arms to grasp nothing but air. I could almost hear the universe going off on a maniacal laugh at that moment as I watched her descend into the glistening water.  I dive after her and felt a heavy push to the chest and water splash across my face. I coughed out a wad of salt water as I opened my eyes to see excited faces staring down at me "Thank God, He's alive!"

Femme Diaries: Ocean Blue Part II (Curious Love)

"So you're an half-breed? i asked downing another glass of the red wine. Lunch went by faster than I could remember my strange but growing attraction to Anna and her intoxicating presence wasn't making things any easier. She asked me to hang out with her at her hotel. My head went off ringing, but i was feeling so weird on the inside starting with my attraction to this woman and the way i felt flattered by the unusual attention i was getting from a fellow woman. That I decided not to question my emotions. All i wanted to do was to have a good time no matter what comes along with that package. I sat down opposite her at the hotel's pool side feeling very light headed. "Yeah, my mum is Turkish" she replied. "Okay so I'm here with you, what are we doing for fun besides getting drunk at a pool side" I blurted after some seconds of another awkward silence. "What do you want to do?" She asked me in response. "I dunno" I scoffed "I just want to have fun I guess" I added. "How about we create memories you and me?" She asked again. "Memories?" I gave a sarcastic chuckle" In how many hours ma'am, you're leaving tomorrow and I have to get back to school" I said pouring another glass of wine. "We already have all the time we need, and please stop with the wine I want you to remember this" she said standing up "Remember what?" I inquired with a smirk on my face. "Lets go to my room". I stood up trying to gain my balance, my legs felt very woozy from the wine. I swaggered behind this weird woman following her to her room.

As she closed the door behind her I sat on the soft bed, taking in the atmosphere of the posh room. Despite my semi-drunk state i could still tell this room was among the top suites in the hotel. It was furnished to taste. "Girl got class" I thought to myself. "Are you okay?" She asked as she sat beside me. "Yeah, tired though" I replied lazily swaying my eyes all around her form. She brought her face closer to mine her blue eyes fixated on my lips. Then it happened so quickly, so unprecedented, next thing i felt her soft lips across mine. I froze and stayed there, I didn't kiss her back, nor did I pull away, she tasted like sweet lemons and red berries. Then finally I had the nerve to move and I curled away, slowly dragging my face backwards. "I'm not a errr..." I started. "A what?" She slowly interrupted, her hand pulling away the hair on my face. "I'm not a lesbian, I'm flattered and all, but I'm not gay" I said in almost whispers. She pulled my face to hers again, but I turned away "Is there anybody who is? why do you people like labels?, being gay or straight what's it matter? I like you and I am attracted to you, why must it be about society's labels?" She asked without a hint of anger in her tone. I sighed looking away and avoiding her gaze. "What if told you i was not gay either and if a guy i find attractive were to walk in, i would still seduce him?" she continued "You couldn't take your eyes off me. When I kissed your wine stained lips it took you too long to move away. You're curious and that's okay" I just nodded in a shaky response, thoughts of her lemony lips lingered on in my senses and I was starting to doubt my own convictions. "I understand and Well you could be my curious love?" She said. "What's a curious love?" I chuckled "This means i can entertain your curiosity and if this gets too uncomfortable you can say so and i will take you back to school. Let me be your experiment" she pulled closer to me again kissing my cheek. I didn't pull away. "How about we go get dinner?" she said after a while of looking into my confused eyes. "I'm not hungry" I replied "do you want to leave?" She asked calmly. Then I replied "Kiss me again". She smiled and moved closer pulling my face to hers. "Are you sure?" she asked me. "Do it while the offer stands" i replied with our foreheads and slightly touching. She placed her lips over mine and she kissed me again. The smell of her perfume wafted my into senses and slowly I kissed her back, and reached for her face.

She slowly took my sweatshirt off as We fell to the bed kissing and she asked "you're not by any chance drunk are you?" Keeping our faces close enough as she spoke. "Nah, I'm sober enough to remind myself your beautiful ocean blue eyes are not real and you need to take out that lens" I replied. She chuckled "okay, smart ass, I just didn't want to have to remind you about the memories I am about to create in the morning" she said as she straddled me and started kissing downwards, I completely let go and let the flow take me.

Femme Diaries: Ocean Blue (Curious Love)

I looked into the same page like i had done a hundred times already. Hoping my tired brain cells would grasp something this time. I wasn't even sure I could register looking at letters, talk more of words or sentences. Philosophy was a boring course to read and this mental exhaustion only meant I needed a break. The problem was getting someone to watch over my seat and the secluded area of the library I sat offered no respite for that. My table usually for four was occupied by only me, the nearest person was two tables away and zoned off on his iPad . I dropped my head to the table, determined to rest my brain nonetheless. I didn't know how many minutes had passed until someone tapped my table, I raised my head to see the most beautiful pair of blue eyes in the world. "Hello, is this seat taken?" she asked pointing at the empty seat opposite me. "No, you can take it" I replied as the slightly-older, super light-skinned female that proceeded to sit opposite me came into full view. Instantly i felt the intimidated by this woman's larger than life presence. This woman's beauty was unreal. She wore a black jumpsuit. The "v" at the neck of the jumpsuit was so low, when she bent to seat i was looking straight into the nakedness of her light-skinned breasts. She sat down and drew out some study catalogues and her MacBook laptop. Rich girl alert!

"You're staring" she said after a while without raising her gaze, snapping me out of the same trance her presence put me In. "Uhn?" I replied with a low giggle, trying to sound surprised. She dropped her catalogue and looked up "You're staring, that's discomforting. If you want to ask me something just ask. Staring is rude" she added then went back to her books. The confidence in her words struck me first the rest of it just seemed to whiz by my hearing. "Urmm.. Ha.. I'm sorry" I said blushing and pulling the hair on my face to the back of my ears. " it's....just your eyes" I said finally. "What about it?" She replied without meeting my gaze which for some desperate reason I needed her to do. " it's blue contact lens obviously, got anything else to ask there Sherlock?" She said without flinching. I was startled by her quick and composed response and mostly belittled, still   i was un-insulted. I didn't shake my stare either. I just sat there star struck staring uncontrollably. After a while of silence she spoke again "Okay, sorry if I sounded rude, my name is Anna" I just smiled in response, looking into her blue eyes.

Over the next 30 minutes, in library-whispers we exchanged enough information about each other to have a proper conversation, without me staring or saying something stupid like I did around really cute guys. She was a masters student from Babcock University doing study research in U.I. She had been in Ibadan all week, it was her last day. Confidence aside, i like to pretend i was a good judge of character so she immediately struck me as an intelligent person. After exhausting small talk data to exchange about each other, I tried to study again. Burying my face once more in my notes, as my brain scrambled into sanity. I finally felt myself assimilating, I raised my gaze to look around the library wing when I saw her staring. I blushed and dropped my face back to my books. I felt very weird. I could still feel her staring, it was like she was looking into my soul. "You're cuter when you're serious" she said after a while. "What?" I chuckled failing woefully at avoiding the blush forming on my cheeks. "You heard me babe" she replied now looking back into her notes. "Babe?..,Are you flirting with me or am I hearing this wrong?" I replied furiously blushing. She narrowed her eyes on my face again. "Hey I'm starving, lets get out of here. I heard Ibadan has KFC now, lets grab lunch" she said suddenly totally ignoring my question. At this point the weirdness I was feeling made my knees ache. " urrm, I would come with you but I have to finish these notes" I replied avoiding her gaze, "it's just lunch Bimbo, I didn't ask you to marry me" she said standing up up pack her books. I chuckled looking around the empty library wing "Who makes a marriage inference with a fellow girl?" I asked. She narrowed her gaze to my chest level and returned to my face with a grin "Well I do" she said turning to leave. "You coming? I'm paying".

Femme Diaries: Lunch (a Curious Love Excerpt)

Coming Soon, Femme Diaries: Curious Love

An hour later i sat at a KFC in Bodija, struggling to chew the last chicken piece. My stomach was so full it ached. "Okay Anna, I'm going to need you to drive me back to school" I said giving a low burp. She gave a funny look encouraging my mannerless burp "Hey, this is my last day  Ibadan, thought we'd hangout, besides I bought you lunch you owe me" she replied. "Ha-ha" i giggled "You blackmailed me into this lunch,  what will we do anyway?". "We could hangout In my hotel for a while I'll drive you back to school later " she replied with a mouthful chewing with so much grace.  "I could call some friends do it sleep-over style, it'll be fun" I added as I watched her facial expression change into a frank but extremely flirtatious focus. Dropping the piece of chicken in her hands she asked "Are you afraid of being alone with me?" a smile slowly pulled itself at the corner of her lips.  Her question caught me off guard, i gave a fake laugh and replied  "Afraid? No, should I be? you're being weird." I said frankly "I did just meet you 3 hours ago and i let you drive me to lunch. Naturally i should be afraid. But I'm not. If I was  I wouldn't be here or is there something  I should be worried about?" I added grinning.  "I like you, how do you feel about that?" she asked licking chicken crumbs off  her blood-red lips and staring into my eyes. This question caught me off guard again. Women can like fellow women right? I felt like I had the answer  but my lips refused to mouth any response. After a few seconds of silence but just staring into blankness and muttering inaudible words, she chuckled and pulled at my left cheek "C'mon pumpkin face, lets go before I have to kiss you" she stood up walking toward the exit as I trotted behind her praying to God I didn't just hear this woman threaten to kiss me. As I stood up I could hear my head ringing "Bimbo this is a bad idea" I chuckled out loud, "I think I like this bad idea"

Femme Diaries: D.A.N.G.E.R.O.U.S (Part 2)

I was fully convinced he had been turned off with the conviction that I was a cheap slut from my sudden bold move. I tried to focus on the program of the wedding, so I can at least have something to tell my mother at home. There was a sudden  tap on my shoulders, I turned around to see the usher that he had called. The usher came to me with a note and left almost immediately. The drop was done so discreetly, nobody on my table seemed to have noticed. The note was short and simple, it read; "Last Car, V.I.P parking lounge, I'll leave first, count 60seconds and join me. If I don't see you in the car In 5 minutes, then I apologise for mis-interpreting your signals. - K"

I should be offended by this note, but i was not, instead I was filled with sudden boldness.  I  raised my head looking at his table, he stole a glance at me as the woman said something into his ears. I looked away again, from his blinding stare. After a while I raised my head to see he was no longer on seat. The space he was sitting before was now occupied by the unreal woman he had been groping all day. She turned a blank stare at me and folded her arms. Looking directly into my eyes like she knew I had been flirting with her man all afternoon. Still mentally counting to 60 in mind, I raised my head searching for him. I spotted him finally, pushing toward the exit of the hall.

58, 59, 60. I counted. I took awhile to steal a glance the woman. She was still staring. Was it a coincidence? Or was she looking at someone behind me? No time to confirm. I decided to go for it. Standing up and  heading toward the exit. I think I saw her stand up from the corner of my eye, my mind didn't register it. I was only focused on meeting "K" in his car.   Someone was walking behind me, I could feel it, but I didn't want to look back. The auditorium was large and it could be anybody I thought to myself. I picked up pace and pretended not to notice.  A voice passed through my ears  "Excuse me" She called out, but I continued walking, "Excuse me please". I slowed down as a deafening laughter echoed through the hall as the best man gave his speech. She caught up, and finally tapped my  shoulders with a hand soft like the breeze. I turned around to see the beauty behind me. She looked even better up close and stood with so much elegance and grace her presence eliminated that of everyone else in the hall. All of a sudden it felt like it was just two of us in the large auditorium. "Hello" she spoke finally. "I see you have engaged yourself in a diversion with my husband from your seat" she spoke as softly as she looked, "What are you talking about? i asked pretentiously. "I've been looking at you checking him out since we arrived here, I know little cunts like you and what you sluts are capable of, so I always come prepared." She said and paused picking word for word like she was allowing each syllable sink in separately.  "This is a military event young lady, you see those soldiers around my table, They could make sure you don't leave here in one piece , so if I were you I would throw that little note away," she paused a bit to look at the surprise on my face "ahh yes, I stood a couple of tables away and I saw him writing you that note, if i were you i would go back to my chair like a good little girl and not fuck with higher powers, because trust me, you have to be dangerous to live dangerous. Enjoy the rest of the party, young lady. Good day" with that she turned around and returned to her seat.

The words struck me. I was grounded to the floor and couldn't even reply my throat was gummed and my palms were suddenly clammy. All I could do was mutter some incomprehensible words to her back as she left. Who is this woman? I slowly dragged back to my seat and sat down. As I sat down wallowing in the shock of my conversation with the dangerous woman. The MC called on the daughter of the General Commander of The Nigerian Army to give a few casual remarks on behalf of her father who was absent. That's when I knew who she was.  Her father was the General Commander of the Nigerian army. I looked at the note one last time about to throw it away in defeat, then I saw the back of the note "If you can't come now, here's my number call me, I have a permanent room at Oriental Hotels -K". I folded the paper and put it safely in my bag as a smile came across my face.  I took a long sip of the red wine in my glass and giggled. K had returned to the table now and he was backing me so i couldn't see his face.  I timed my movement and walked out the hall with the woman still giving her speech. I pulled out my blackberry just outside the hall, sent a text to a number and headed to my car.

3 minutes had passed as I sat in the car. Where was he? I put my car in ignition ready to leave when someone opened the passenger door and sat down. "If you hadn't been here in 5 minutes, I would have texted you to apologise for mis-interpreting your signals" I told him. He gave a throaty laugh  "can we leave here before the sergeant I told I wanted to take a piss discovers there's a toilet in the hall? The name is Kayode".  I burst into a wild laugh as I gunned for the exit gate.

The End.

Femme Diaries: D.A.N.G.E.R.O.U.S (Part 1)

I hate weddings, I swear I hate weddings. The entire ceremony of celebrating a woman's selling into a lifetime of society's prison and worse into marriage, a bourgeoise institution that was constantly failing around the world, seemed  like a masculinist agenda to me. But I had to be at this one. Mother literarily dragged me out of bed to attend on behalf of herself and my dad. My father was not around as usual.  Mother says she's too tired from work the week that just ended, I know it's a lie though. She just doesn't like my cousin who was getting married or her parents, nobody did actually. Mother  claims its because my aunt, her sister-in-law was a pompous bitch figurehead and  she has a clique of ruthlessly evil friends  that could crush anyone beneath their feet, of course that and the rumour that this dangerous clique of high-society women trafficked young girls to Italy and across Europe into sex slavery. Her husband, an Air Force Marshall is rumoured to  own oil blocks in the Niger-Delta, a pay-off from a dictatorial Nigerian Leader in the 70's not to ally with the Igbo(s) of the Biafran army. Personally, I just think people are intimidated by their wealth.

A few hours later  I found a parking spot at the venue, came out of the car, donned on dark shades and started walking toward the exquisite hall rented for the event. It was a hot Saturday and I was here alone, I should've invited someone I thought as I approached the security point at the entrance. Groaning under my breath as the security guard inquired for my invitation card. I hated these high-society events, they had security like the president would be in attendance and for some reason i couldn't find my I.V. I turned around to go back to the car and check for it,  that's when I saw him.

Tall, light skinned, his  chest was so broad, I'd probably need extra hands to explore all of it. He had dreamy brown eyes, slick thin lips and well trimmed coal black hair. He had an aura of confidence around him, a beautiful man with a rugged edge, the thought made my thighs moist. A smile pulled itself at the corner of his lips in perfection and I didn't realise he had closed in on me nor that I had been staring for at least 10seconds until he bumped into me. I tripped backwards throwing my purse and everything I held in my hands in the air. As I reached backwards trying to grab onto something. The rough hands of a security officer suddenly grabbed me,  held me up and saved me from creating a scene in front of the entrance as people swarmed in. By the time I regained composure, I looked around and the living fantasy of a person was gone. He hadn't even stopped to apologise for bumping into me. I dusted the creases off my dress and walked back to my car to find the I.V.

I sat inside the air conditioned hall after checking into the event centre paying very little attention to the ceremony procession, I could hear the MC's voice and the chattering of the boring people on my table distant at the back of my mind. I continued to scan around trying to  find the eye candy of a man that literarily swept off my feet at the entrance through the hall. One hour later just when I had resented to faith and the conclusion I might have been imagining things, the MC announced the arrival of the representatives of the Commander General of the Nigerian Army. Coincidentally  he was there again. He walked across the hall, holding the hands of a strikingly beautiful woman. The woman was a head turner, she looked just as unreal as he was. They arrived at a table already surrounded by soldiers then It dawned on me, he must be the representative. This was an Air Marshall's daughter's wedding  anyway, military people should be in attendance.

I sunk into my chair depressed definitely convinced couldn't ever get close enough to him with the security he was surrounded by, or even compete with the woman he sat by.  I wondered how it was possible these kind of people existed in the real world,  they were both so perfect. He sat across me, with the woman beside him constantly nuzzling at him and burying her head on his shoulder. My heart dropped into a hollow grove . I continued staring shamelessly for a while then the unexpected happened. He was side-tracked by an announcement the M.C made and as he returned his gaze back to his table our eyes came in contact. He stayed there for a while with an amused look on his face. He must have remembered me from the fiasco at the entrance. A smile pulled at the corner of his lips  still maintaining the eye contact. I blushed uncontrollably and looked  away, looking down at the food on my table. I raised my gaze slowly and found him looking elsewhere. He was casually stealing glances now, and would go into a full blown stare the moment the woman beside him wasn't looking. He  knew I was looking but he just kept at it, he was enjoying the flirtatious fun.   I pulled the hair on my face to the back of my ears and looked into the glass of red wine on my table. I raised my face again and the woman was gone. He sat there alone. This time he was sipping from a glass and staring at me over the top of the glass. The absence of the fantasy woman gave me great joy as  I made up mind and got bolder, this man wanted me goddammit. I sat up right looked him in the eye and bit my bottom lip.  The sudden bold move from the girl who had been blushing like a child a few minutes ago seemed to have shocked him. He looked away and called one of the ushers at the event. After scribbling down something, he gave the usher a piece of paper and something else. The usher left his side immediately. The woman returned not long after and he completely stopped looking at my table, me or anything in my radius.

To Be Continued.

Femme Diaries: Awakened

"Heyy Bimbo,  shit Bimbo wake up!"  The anxious tone of a a vaguely familiar voice dragged me out of sleep. I opened my eyes still half asleep to see a lightly bearded  man in his mid-years naked and hovering over me face full with fear. I backed off and almost shrieked. What the hell happened last night?
"Thank God you're up you need to leave right now, my wife is on her way back, hurry up!" His words hadn't fully registered yet so  I slowly raised the covers and slid off the bed. That was when the obvious discovery hit me, I was naked and my clothes were no where around the vicinity of the seemingly luxurious room I apparently just slept in. Then the last 2 minutes played back in my head; Wife. Home. Leave. And me butt naked? Fuck, I just slept with a married man whose name I couldn't even remember!

The naked  man was now pacing around the room and picking  up under-wears, condom wrappers and empty wine bottles, he stopped and looked over at me in my semi-confused state and screamed  "Are you deaf?! you need to get the hell out of my house, my wife is the fucking anti-Christ" he raised his hands to the roof  like he was asking God to attest to the evil that is his wife. I had to find my clothes, shoes and purse, and get the hell out of here like i was ordered. Wherever "here" was anyway.  "Where Are my clothes?" I asked groggily. He looked around the room like he was trying to picture where It was then he replied "Downstairs, they're in the living room downstairs" I dashed downstairs and found my clothes scattered everywhere, I picked up the pieces in a rush and started the get dressed, I picked up my purse and checked if the contents were still intact. Still trying to figure my bearings I looked around the posh living room, pictures of the naked man and his wife were plastered everywhere. Though he was clothed in these pictures, i couldn't shake off the mental image of his nakedness, his wife looked pretty, nothing like the devil he painted her to be. I still couldn't understand why I couldn't remember his name though.

The naked man came running downstairs, his limp phallus dangling between his laps as he took each step. This man's unperturbed nakedness was starting to upset my insides. Was he nudist? or did he not just care? "Ah! there you are sitting like the queen of England, she's already at the gate, you have to go out through the back, come on, up! up! up!" He motioned for me to get up and follow him as he led the way towards the kitchen. He was fidgety with every step and i figured he had either not done this before or his wife is just the terror he described her to be. As I stood up I realised one heel of my 6" inch heels had broken off, I gave a low curse as I heard him call out at me again to follow him.

I followed closely behind, then I heard a door from a distance end of the room open,  "Honey, I'm home, my flight landed  early" I heard a sweet voice from the living room. The naked man just walked ahead of me swearing like a pirate as he pushed me out of the back door. "Take the front I'll hold her Inside till I'm sure you're gone"  He pushed some squeezed naira notes he had previously been holding, in my hands and closed the door on me. I walked towards the front gate of the house still taking  note of my bearings and surroundings, the house looked really luxurious. I approached the foot gate and pulled at it,  but it wouldn't budge, I realised it was locked. "Fuck" I swore out loud. The fence seemed low enough but there was no leverage to climb with. I threw my shoes and purse across the fence, raised my gown above my knee and jumped to grab the top of the fence. After squirming and struggling for about 2 minutes without leverage but still holding on to the fence, i finally got to the top of the fence. Luckily there were no barb wires or broken bottles as a security on the fence like the average Nigerian house.  I motioned my way to jump down the other side of the fence, then piercing  through the silence of the morning, I hear the sweet female voice again much aggravated than sweet this time though  "Heyy you what do you think you are doing?" Without thinking I flipped down over the fence, picked my belongings I had thrown over the fence and started running. I didn't look back, somewhere at the back of my mind I could hear the woman screaming loudly I wasn't sure if it was my the fear in my mind playing tricks on my sanity or if she was actually screaming that loud from the house. I saw the estate gate in sight and ran towards it, I could still hear a voice screaming and cursing out. The street was empty as it was still quite early in the morning and the estate looked like the kind where you don't see anybody in the day talk less of around 6:00 in the morning, so nobody seemed to notice me running for my life.

I rushed outside the estate gate and flagged down the first cab I saw. "U.I" I told the cab man panting. Just as i was getting into the cab,  I saw her, running toward me,  eyes fiery like a dragon, spitting fire and brimstone with every step. I couldn't make out what she was saying but she seemed really angry and though quite a distance from me, kept on pointing at me in the cab. I figured she had probably been chasing me since she saw me, the locked gate must have bought me time to get ahead properly. The cab man drove off as I settled into the cab. I realised there was a hurt in my leg, i must have fucked up my ankle from jumping off the fence so suddenly.

Then finally like a sudden wind it came to me and i said aloud, "Vincent, his name is Vincent" not talking to anyone in particular. The cab man turned probably not haven't picked up what I said "Wetin be that madam?" He asked and leaned his head towards me, "Oga nothing oo.. nothing"  I replied as the events of that morning replayed in my head and I burst into a wild laugh.

The events of the previous night came back to me too. I had met Vincent at a bar around school, I stepped into alone, determined to get some fun out of the last Sunday night, I had followed him home out of curiosity and thirst for adventure and here I was. I gave another laugh as i noticed the cab driver watching me through the rear view mirror probably wondering if he just lifted a mad person. I have never done anything like this in my life. Probably wouldn't again, but this only one has  definitely  been memorable.

READ: Surviving The Twilight (Part 3)

NB: This is the final story in a three-part series. Please click Here to read the previous parts

5:30 - I pulled onto the express again racing toward a private beach, I knew a couple of dealers there, but they only sell the soft stuff, not the heroin or cocaine my wife was addicted to, but maybe they could give me information or probably even sighted her. I arrived at the beach a few minutes later and it was deserted, I had somehow forgot the time of the day and figured the dealers would probably be asleep. They say love adds the mumu factor, I honestly just saw the truth to that.  I drove out of the beach and made 3 more stops  around places I felt she could have gone.  With no luck anywhere i see the morning twilight graze the early morning sky, in its beauty. I feel my sanity slipping away from me, all we had to do was survive this twilight, day break will come soon, I prayed.  How am I still  in love with this bundle of work I call a wife? Any man should have backed off, packed his bags and run. How can i tolerate all of Victoria's habits without question? Her drug use habit for one is  so bad it has threatened  the lives of her and everyone around her, to the tiniest fabrics of their being. We have both lost friends and family because of her drug addiction. Her father hasn't asked after us in years, he specifically blames Vicky's drug addiction on her marrying me and her refusal to marry the person she had been betrothed to. The worst part of all this is that in the long run I'm giving out so much love and taking a chance on someone that may never fully reciprocate, understand or feel the same way for me. I think it's true what they say that love is for the insane.

6:45- My heart says a silent prayer as I drive by a Catholic Church. If God is there he'd have mercy on me in the pureness of my heart and Intentions. It's nothing religious. As i continue my drive on the goose chase journey to no where, i approach a traffic light and hear my phone beep of a received text. I silently prayed it was something positive though I wasn't expecting anyone to call me with good news. I picked up my phone to see a Debit Alert, i hissed and was about to toss the phone on the passenger seat when it hit me. I hadn't done any bank transaction that morning. Vicky was with my wallet and in it were my ATM cards if i was receiving any bank alerts it means she just recently used my bank card and the best part these texts came with the location of where the transaction took place. The moment I saw moment i read the location as "First Bank/Obalende" I knew exactly where she was. I returned to the express gunning for a rough neighbourhood close to the 3rd mainland bridge.

We stopped at a building there once after returning from a friend's party from the mainland. Funny story that day, she had pulled me into the neighbourhood and said a woman there sold her fresh water fish, she couldn't get anywhere else on the island. Of course it brought a curious thought to my mind because Victoria rarely cooked, but like i said earlier, love lets  you acknowledge your stupidities but never let's you fully accept the reality. So I parked In front of the white building that simply read "Cold Room Here", just right beside the building was a First Bank branch, where she  used my ATM card that fateful day. She walked into the building and I sat in the car and waited. Time flies quickly when you're playing Angry Birds, I looked up a few minutes  later and realised she had been gone 30minutes. After awhile I got out of the car and walked Into the building. There was a garage-style stall open, freezers left and right in the stall, but no sign of Vicky. I walked further into the shop calling out, eventually a light skinned man came out from an inner room he spoke in an heavily Igbo-accented pidgin "Yes who you dey find?".
"A woman, My wife she entered  inside this place to buy fresh fish or something like that" I replied confused. He paused and looked into my eyes like he was trying to see through me "fresh fish?" he chuckled" "abi na your wife be Vicky?" I nodded   " Una and this una Oyinbo, dey there dey nod like lizard. Any how sha follow me" he waved his hands in the direction of the inner room he just came from and I followed him. I entered the poorly lit room and found her sprawled on the floor. Her eyeballs rolled back into her eye sockets revealing only her white  sclera. One wrist tied with a tiny rope, the other holding on to an empty syringe. She was barely conscious, her laboured and forced breathing was the only thing that confirmed she was still alive. That was the third time I had seen her like that so my panic was controlled, but I will never forget the "fresh fish" ruse, I still laugh about it even.

7:45 "Oga carry your wife Comot here, I wan go back sleep" I heard the accented Igbo voice and snapped out of my momentary trance. I picked my wallet and cards scattered on the floor, slowly lifted Victoria and carried her in my arms towards by car. I laid her in the passenger seat and belted her in and kissed her forehead

8:30am-  "I'm thirsty I need water" I heard a voice from beside me. She was finally awake, I had been driving for almost 45 minutes. "Hey, how do you feel?" I replied. "Fine" she answered and sat up. We made a stop at a store to get water and continued the drive. After a while of silence as we approached home she spoke "Why do you put up with me?" She asked almost sobbing. I smiled and looked at her over my shoulder "I guess that's what people do when they're In love" i replied and shrugged. "I'm sorry I am such a mess, I'm sorry I'm such a screw up, I'm sorry and I'm ready to make this work" she said in between sobs "and i love you, always had, always will" she added with tears trickling down her cheeks and reached across and gave a soft on my cheek. "I love you too" I replied simply and focused on the road, I was afraid saying anything else would ruin the moment. Her Visa Application interview was at 11:00am hopefully her high would have worn off  and she would be sober enough for the interview . My brother in America had promised to get her into a rehab centre in America and I am willing to send her there and give us another chance at a proper married life. Despite all this craziness, I haven't given up yet.

On the radio I could hear New Day by Alicia Keys playing in the background, I turned it up, smiled and thought to myself "Perfect".

READ: Surviving The Twilight (Part 2)

This is the 2nd part of these story. Click Here To Read the previous part of this story

5: 00- I pulled on to the Lekki - Ajah expressway, with no idea of where i might be heading, where to start to look for my wife. Calling her was obviously not an option, her 4th phone this month was missing again. Heading no where in search of her is not the worst that we have been in our marriage though, but last night had been amazing for both of us. We had gone out to dinner at a a Chinese cuisine somewhere on the island and returned home to amazing sex we rarely even had anymore despite being married for just 4 years. Why is this happening now. For the past few months, I have succeeded in shielding her from herself, keeping money away from her, so she can't buy more drugs. I've been basically  helping her help herself. Last night however I had been too tired to put my wallet, or my ATM cards away and now she is on the loose again. I drove into the familiar parking lot of the 1004 building, I know she has a customer here, I have driven her here myself once when she had a craving episode so bad I was convinced she was going to die. I walked toward the building and prayed the elevators were working, I couldn't imagine wasting time climbing the flight of stairs, especially if at the long run she isn't here. I got to the front of flat and knocked a couple of times before someone answered  "who are you?" A female voice came from behind the door.
More..
"I need to see Mex is he awake, it's really urgent?" I quizzed.
"That doesn't answer my question Mr Oyinbo, drop the accent and answer me, who are you?" She replied and still she didn't open the door.
I almost chuckled, I had tried so much to lose my British accent and somehow she could still hear it from behind the door. "Tell him it's Vicky's Husband". There was a silent pause for a bit, a few minutes later she opened the door slightly without releasing the latch, and asked "are you alone?" I nodded slightly. The door opened and the woman with the voice stood there topless with a cigarette between her fingers, I didn't even notice I was staring until she snapped at me "What? Never seen boobies before? Are you coming in or what?" She turned and walked back into the flat calling out at Mex with every stride and leaving me to shut the door myself. I followed closely behind and stood still surveying the living room, everything seemed in order except the air that smelt like stale  marijuana smoke and burnt chocolate. No sign of Vicky. Mex seems to have made a proper living for himself with his type of job in a country like Nigeria. I heard approaching footsteps, a moderately large man walked into the living room. "Bayo, i thought you didn't use?" He coughed out. I cleared my throat, "I don't Meks..". He sniffed then gave a throaty laugh "then why are you in my house at 5' in the morning, dressed in your pyjamas looking like shit?,  anyways no judgement, what can I give you pills, powder or crystal?, Vicky owes me $18000 by the way, roughly about 2.7m naira give or take" he added casually as  my eyes widened in horror. I thought I was going to have a cardiac arrest "why would you let her leave with so much stuff you buffoon?" I asked hoping I don't burst a vein open in my head.  "Hey-hey family guy watch the lingo" He sniffed again and wiped his nose with the back of his hand. "They always come back when they have so much of the good stuff, I figured one day I'd refuse to give her anymore shit until she settled the debts, she'd definitely  get desperate enough to pay off the old one for new shit and if that don't happen, I send my boys after her." He sniffed again then continued  "So why are you here? I need to get back to sleep."
"I can't find Vicky, been looking for her all morning, I thought she came by here for a hit" I said almost whispering.  He looked at me sternly then spoke "ahh, can't help you there bra, I haven't seen her in weeks, thought she left the country even" he sounded almost genuinely concerned.  "Thanks I should be on my way, text me an account number, I'll settle Vicky's debts before today runs out"
I stood up and motioned to leave. "Better do Bayo, or I'll find you and fuck up your life" he said in all seriousness like he was allowing the new information settle in, paused then gave out another loud laugh "I'm kidding, I love you both, but pay me though, I don't want to go all gangster on you. And by the way lose the fucking accent, who you dey form for?" I nodded, turned  around and walked out of the apartment.

READ: Surviving The Twilight (Part 1)

This is a 3-part article. Please read along and enjoy.

7:30 - I finally found her, lying on the floor. Syringe in one hand, a blow pipe in the other. Aside the powder that spread all over her face concentrated on her nose, her face was as pale as death itself. In the dim light of the room i could still see her over punctured skin and the little red dots all over her body. Scars left behind by syringe ruptures. Her eyeballs were rolled back into her head and all i could see was her white sclera. Just right beside her head was a pool of vomit. She looked up as she heard me enter and mouthed the words "I'm sorry" no sound came out, but her eyes said it all. I just knelt beside her semi-conscious body and held her close to me. My gladness knew no bounds this morning's race nearly drove me insane, Although today is not the first, I very well hope it be the last.
More..
4:35 - I didn't know how long I had been asleep but definitely not long, the hazy hum of the air condition across room assured me i was definitely no longer sleeping. I didn't open my eyes though, just sleepily tried to reach out for her, I stretched my arms to grab nothing but air and  my hands fell back on the woollen duvet. Maybe she is in the bathroom i thought as i open my eyes and sat up "Honey?.. Vicky?" I call out but nothing. "Sweetheart are you in the bathroom?" Nothing still. She's downstairs definitely I concluded as i turned on the lights and looked at my bedside alarm clock to check the time  4:35a.m, something was amiss, I could feel it in my bones. I walked downstairs and called out again "Honey, come back to bed" then suddenly like an oncoming truck it hit me. From the emptiness of the top of my bedside drawer, that only meant one thing, I hoped for better as I rushed back upstairs to check the cabinet I kept my wallet before bed. "Shit not again" I screamed out loud as my eyes widened in horror. I scrambled around the room putting on the first pants I could lay my hands on in my closet, picked my phone and car keys and ran out of the house. As I suspected her car wasn't in the compound "Shit shit shit" I continued to curse out loud as I dash for my car. I click open the remote activated gate and started to pull out of the compound. "Shit!, How could i have been so stupid?" I screamed out loud.

I used to believe in love stories though but only the simple things, you know? boy meets  girl, boy likes girl they should be together logically. Well best believe that story is flawed, because the way marriage tests your sanity goes beyond your "I Do(s)" and assumed happily ever afters. To begin with Victoria never really loved me, though i have known her for most of my adult life and loved her since too. We had gone to the same High
school and some how same  University of Bath in England. Though we were best of friends all through, i knew also that i sadly couldn't be anything more than good friend to her. After struggling with grades drug addictions and other bad habits, Victoria dropped out of school and returned to Nigeria while I continued schooling.  Victoria and her elitist father never got along so it was no surprise she rebelled against her father's betrothal of her hand in marriage to the son of one of his business partners shortly after she returned. Her father had let her be on the condition she got married the next year. I returned to Nigeria a few years later and we got in contact, and soon she was all over me like she suddenly found joy she didn't see before in me and since I never stopped loving her, I fell easily back head over heels insane about her. I have to admit though, it did feel  good to be loved back though, or at least to be made feel like you're loved back. But though she claimed to loved me and we got married the following  year, i always knew her marrying me was her way of defying her father and preventing him from getting his desired satisfaction. She had basically chosen me as lesser of two evils.

Before the Dawn Of The Reaper, Part 5: What Didn't Kill Me, Didn't Make Me Stronger.

NOTE: This is a series of stories. To read the previous stories, click here

"Are you coming in?" he asked again, snapping me out of my trance, "huh?" I asked. "You zoned out on me Sade, are you coming in?" he replied with the same smile on his face. "urrm why don't you change your shirt and let me drive us to find breakfast huh?". He looked uncertain then shrugged "what the hay, no problem, give me a sec". A few minutes later we were seated in a Pizza Place, I was gently sipping a cup of a bad coffee. There was a ground breaking silence between us. I struggled to maintain composure as different emotions ran through my mind. I wanted to slap him, I wanted to kiss him, I wanted to kill him, and I wanted to ask him why he had lost so much weight. He finally broke the silence "I didn't think you would come..."  I avoided his gaze and replied "I didn't think I would come either" taking another long sip of the crappy coffee. "Well, that's understandable, how are you? How are you? How is sch……?" I cut him short and asked "What is this about Odun? Why did you bring me to see you? I have better things I should be doing, like not having breakfast with a ritualist for example, so make this worth my time, now spill!" I looked around to make sure my voice wasn't too loud, nobody seemed to be paying attention to us. He kept quiet again for what seemed like eternity then spoke "I'm dying Sade, earlier this year I was diagnosed with rare disease that causes my kidneys to shrink, even after getting transplants twice, the same thing still.  It's no point though, I already know it's nothing medical. The Baba that made us rich already told us the repercussion if we allow any of the people we bring into that room you saw to escape, and you did. He said the God of Iron himself will take our lives. Tolu and Malik already died, I'm the only one still alive….." his voice trailed off as I remember seeing a headline on one of the major local blogs that read "OAU Big Boys Die in Car Crash" during the weekend, though I didn't open the story, Odun's testimony makes everything add up.

"We all have to pay for our mistakes one way or the other" Odun continued "So I have been trying to close loose ends since I realized, I might be dying soon." I sighed totally confused and unclear on a perfect response to give, I finally mustered up a question to ask "Why Odun? You were not suffering, your parents gave you all you needed, why did you sell your soul?" I stared into his eyes, but his face was blank. He started again "Sade Dearest, Some of these thing I don't have answers to. Societal pressure forces us into the stupidest things, I guess. Thank you for coming, I'm really sorry I hurt you, I'm sorry for everything". I couldn't even muster any word out of my mouth, especially considering if this was true it means he had chosen to die instead of offering me for the ritual, I felt tears rolling down my cheeks "Odun I loved you, always did, why were you so stupid, I never even asked you to give me anything under compulsion, why?" I was fully sobbing now. He crossed over from his seat and sat beside me, he used his thumb to wipe my tears as I rested my head on his shoulder. Some minutes passed and I broke the silence again "How Long before you know..?" I asked between sobs. " The Doctor said my current kidney would probably stop working completely this month and honestly I am no longer afraid of death, my parents don't know, haven't even told them I'm  a dead man walking yet" he heaved a sigh and gave a sarcastic chuckle. "I missed you" he started again "every day after you left, I never stopped regretting and cursing that dark Saturday". I was now crying, heavily now, I didn't even care if the people in the restaurant were looking. He would gently "sush" me, caress my face and will me to stop. His touch as ever gentle as the breeze of a beach in the evening.

"I need to go" he said "I have another pointless doctor's appointment by 2" he added and smiled. "Do you need me to drop you? Or stay with you?" I asked looking into his eyes. "Ha-ha... I thought you had better things to do than have breakfast with a ritualist?" he joked lightly, I remembered how funny he had always been. "Don't worry Sade, I'm fine by myself, I will call you tomorrow, hopefully they will have network reception in heaven" he joked again, I smiled now. "Walk me to get a cab?" I nodded in agreement. He held out his hands to help me up.

I was driving home when a text came in from "Thanks for coming to see me, I just donated what's left of my bank account to charity. It wouldn't erase my sins but it feels really good on the inside to do. See you soon or maybe not. Lol...Will always Love you. Odun". I smiled wondering how he was still able to keep on making small jokes despite his predicament.

I got home and lay on my bed, cold, tired and very depressed. I was already drifting into sleep when a call came in from Odun's number "Hello, Is this Miss Sade?" "Yes, who is this?" "This is the Lagos State 747 response team, an accident just happened along St Nicholas Hospital involving the owner of this number  and the taxi driver, we checked his last messages and phone calls and have been putting out calls to the last people he got in contact with to come and Identify the body…………….". The Voice trailed off behind my mind as the phone dropped from my hands and tears effortlessly streamed out of my eyes. The End.

Before The Dawn Of The Reaper, Part 4: Run Baby Run!!

NOTE: This is a series of stories. To read the previous and following stories, click here

I stood there frozen in the front of the open cupboard staring at three skulls soaked in a reddish liquid that I had no doubt was blood, three red candles that looked like they had been burning recently and what was no doubt several fetish objects. My heart was pounding out of my head, my breathing was shallow and I suddenly developed a sense of claustrophobia.  I ran out of into Odun's room and started to pack my things, adding everything together and coming to the conclusion that Odun had been into occultism that was how he could afford the life he was living. I had heard of money rituals in movies and regular pop culture, but I had never set my eyes on anything as gruesome. Good God! How did I not see this, why didn't it occur to me? I had to get out of the house, I'm in danger myself. "Where are you going? Babe I wasn't even gone up to two hours" I turned and realized I hadn't notice Odun come into the room. I spun around eyes wide open like I had just seen a ghost "Odun… You fucking liar, what is in that kitchen store?" he looked baffled for a second then asked "Sade, What store?" "The store with the skulls in it you fucking liar! Is that what you do? Killing people? That is your major import and export? Jesus Christ Odun! Did you bring me here to use me too?" he cringed, eyes wide open then started "Oh my God, Sade, what were you looking for there? Shit! Shit!  Shit! You were not meant to see that!" his voice had shifted into a full blown panic now. "Sade, you have to leave Ife now!" I looked up at him surprised at the statement "Have to leave now? You think I was contemplating staying after what I just saw? Hell fucking no! but I need an explanation" he cringed again, totally freaking out now and said "Sade no time to explain, the rule we were given was anyone outside myself Tolu and Malik who set eyes on the skulls, had to be killed and used, you have to leave before Tolu or Malik come back.. Fuck! Sade you have killed me"... With that I packed up my bag and stormed out of the room with a new energy almost breaking into a sprint. He followed me, closely behind and led me out of the gate, at that point I couldn't even stand him around me, I quickly flagged down a cab just right outside the gate. As I entered the cab he leaned by the cab's window and said "I saved your life Sade, please keep this a secret, I'll always love you", I flinched and replied with tears rolling down my cheeks, "Fuck you and your Love Odun! now hear this, don't ever call me, don't text me, don't talk to my friends, don't send me emails, don't send me gifts, if I even smell your presence in Unilag, I will make sure you are lynched and beaten to death by a blood thirsty mob, you are dead to me" with that I ordered the cab man to drive off as I burst into full scale crying..............To Be Continued
