SO, you've a personal computer but all you use it for is to watch movies or just play around. Or you simply want to turn up your PC a notch? Don't worry, we've got listed below 5 apps we think you can't (or is it must not) do without.
1. Microsoft Office Suite
King of this list is the ultimate office suite. Microsoft Office Suite consists of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint and other programs which a student or a business man can't do without. With all its uses, it has a major downside of not being free/
Alternatives: The best free alternatives to the Microsoft Office suite are the Apache Open Office (download HERE) and the LibreOffice (download HERE) which provide services very similar to the MS Office Suite. They are open-source and always free.
Download Microsoft Office Suite
Download Apache Open Office
Download LibreOffice
2. Mozilla Firefox/Google Chrome/Internet Explorer/ Any Internet Browser
With the world becoming a smaller global village everyday, we can not but emphasise the importance of the internet and its several uses. The internet which can be used for seemingly everything possible has come to stay. The internet consists of billions of linked pages which can only be served to our different computers through the help of broswers such as Firefox or Google Chrome. the choice of the type of browser to use totally depends on the user.
Writer's Choice: Google Chrome.
Download Mozilla Firefox
Download Google Chrome
Download Internet Explorer
Download Apple's Safari
Download Opera
3. Adobe Reader/ Foxit Reader / Any Other PDF Reader
The Portable Document Format (simply called .pdf) is one of the most popular file formats in the digital world these days. It is highly useful in delivering rich content and is fast becoming the format of choice for professional documents. A personal computer does not come bundled with the ability to read a PDF format unless through the use of a third party app such as Adobe reader. Adobe Reader has always been faulted to be a RAM-consuming and battery-killing software (the writer a;so experienced this) but still remains the top choice among the reader apps.
Best alternative : Foxit Reader
Download Adobe Reader
Download FoxIT Reader
4. VLC Media Player
Arguably the best media player out there (am open to arguments), VLC is an open-source, free and adware-free, cross-platform (Windows, Maac, Anroid, Linux, BSD, etc) media player. It is able to play all forms of media formats and codecs without the need to install additional codec software.
Best alternative: None whatsoever. If it isn't VLC, it can't be like VLC.
Download VLC
5. Connectify
This app originally should not be on the list if not for the fact that the writer (*smiles*) uses it always. Connectify allows us to share the internet connection on our computers to other devices including but not limited to other computers. The main advantage of this app is that it allows the users to use just one internet subscription on different devices (this writer shares his laptop's internet connection to his two wi-fi enabled phones and his desktop computer) without the use of a physical router. The software basicaly simulates a router using the Wi-Fi adapter of the computer. Works best on a Windows 7 or Windows 8 powered computer. The software goes for $49 or so and is actually worth the money. For those who aren't afraid of breaking the law, cracks are available everywhere on the Internet ( you didn't hear that from me o).
Best alternatives: mHotspot, Virtual Router Plus
P.S: In the writer's view, the alternatives listed above are not as good as Connectify even though they are free.
Download Connectify
Download mHotspot
Download Virtual Router Plus
