The names of four of the attackers were confirmed by a military spokesman in Kenya as new CCTV footage from the shopping centre appears to show the heavily-armed men in the middle of their assault.
Government officials believe the four terrorists were the only ones involved in the attack. Previous estimates had suggested that up to 15 gunmen took part in the shootings.
Major Emmanuel Chirchir said the attackers were Abu Baara al-Sudani, Omar Nabhan, Khattab al-Kene and Umayr,
Kenyan police confirmed ‘there was no woman’ among the attackers, seemingly ending speculation that Muslim convert Lewthwaite was one the armed attackers.
The 29-year-old widow of 7/7 bomber Jermaine Lindsay had become the most wanted woman in the world after Interpol issued a global ‘red notice’ for her arrest.
The agency said Lewthwaite, also believed to use the alias Natalie Webb, ‘is wanted by Kenya on charges of being in possession of explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony dating back to December 2011’.
