Nothing Was The Same - Drake (Album Review)
From the same rapper that asked us to "Thank Me Later" and later in his utmost politeness advised us to "Take Care" Aubrey 'Drake' Graham will release his third studio album officially on the 26th of this month. Through a few sources i can't divulge to you, I was able to lay my hands on the LP a few days ago , and as a music enthusiast, I had to give my own personal point of view on the 15 track Album. This is my personal review of Drake's soon to be released "Nothing Was The Same" Album.
Drake came into the mainstream as one of the few rappers fans could actually connect with, being in an industry where the culture revolved around using lyrics that talked about nothing but guns, money and women. Drake's lyrics on the contrary reveal more about his personal life, problems everyday people go through and of course, Love and relationships. This has led him to be labelled a "softy" by many. Nonetheless, he is an amazing artiste both as a singer and as a rapper, who is successful in his wake.
Nothing Was The Same, I have to admit offered nothing too new out of the old Drake we already know. The album was far from the fantasy track list that was released on the Internet a few weeks ago. I call it "fantasy" because it looked too good to be true, the track list had so many awesome features, if it had been released, It would definitely go platinum in its first week. Kudos to awesome production and a key features of artistes like Jhene Aiko, Big Sean and JayZ though else the album would have come out average like Wale's Gifted (which was an utter disappointment, after all the hype).
The album sounded like the same old Drake in hurting relationships and trying to stay uncommitted in relationships where he is deeply in love with a girl, a few radio songs, of course coupled with the occasional talks about his uncle, mother, grandmother and his middle-class teenage years in Toronto compared to his affluent adult hood as an accomplished artiste. Drake's NWTS is still a great album though, for you die hard Drake fans that would still enjoy to listen to old Drake on a new beat. It was almost like Drake didn't make too much effort to better the best of him we have heard all through his "So Far Gone" mix tape up to "Take Care".
Nonetheless Drake is an anthem starter if you remember the way he had us all screaming YOLO in 2011, a term coined by him off his track "The Motto"? A few months ago he made us realise he "Started From the Bottom" too, which is still stuck on mental replay in the heads of many. There's always that song that gets stuck on replay when you're listening to every new album, for me that was "Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music featuring Jay Z" the mid tempo song was done justice to, by Blue Ivy's father far beyond doubts, it finally confirms the coming together of Drake and Jay Z on a track can never go wrong, of course I'm speaking In respect of their two previous collaborations on Drake's "Light Up" on his "Thank Me Later" sophomore album and Jay Z's "Off That" off his Blueprint 3 album. Also worthy of mention aside "Started From The Bottom" and "Hold On We're Going Home" which we already know, is "All Me" featuring G.O.O.D music's Big Sean and 2 Chainz, "From Time" which features Jhene Aiko and Track 10 on the album titled "The Language"
Regardless of the inability of the released fantasy track list to materialise into reality, this "Nothing Was The Same" will be worth your every penny if you decide to buy it. But I suspect only real fans of Drake's music would enjoy it the most. To be honest, compared to all the other hip hop albums that have been released all through summer, Drake's NWTS is just a little above average, up there along side Kanye West's Yeezus and just right above Wale's Gifted, nothing to compare with content and newness of JayZ's MCHG or J.Cole's Born Sinner though. I don't know about you guys, but everything on this album, seems very much the same.
